Strength in Mentoring

There are many reasons why our clients choose to enter our mentorship program. Our mentorship program can help you manage conflict and stress, as well as ease the transition of deployment or reintegration into civilian life. Our mentors are veterans and spouses of veterans who can act like a friend and guide.

They have experience that has allowed them to have a greater understanding. They share their knowledge by first listening and then coaching, informally counseling and modeling success. Mentoring allows the mentee to ask specific questions, as well as have the opportunity to have an on going relationship of dialogue, learning and conquering challenges. Our veteran mentors, who are wise and informal counselors can mentor military, veteran and family in a confidential environment, where mutual respect and collaboration can foster psychosocial support and the transmission of knowledge of military/life experience.

“Sometimes it helps to sit with a brother in arms who knows what you have been through.” - Paul Shumate, SIS Mentor and former US Army Officer and Pilot

“I can help wives manage the stress of deployment. After surviving several deployments myself, I have learned a few things.” - SIS Mentor, wife of a Colonel in the National Guard

Vision Statement

Our vision is for every service man, service woman, veteran and their family members to have the mental health services, resources and support that they earned, deserve and need. these services will be delivered in a timely manner in an environment based on respect, collaboration and kindness that serves the whole person, the whole family and the whole community.

Available Programs

SIS serves all military and family members, including active, non-active, reserve, guard, or veteran, from any branch of the military to address their challenges in a timely, competent, and supportive manner. All ages are welcome, and while no family will be turned away, most are low-income. As described in our mission statement, SIS structures its programs on three pillars:

Counseling

Building on the experience of its founders in offering low fee and pro bono mental health services to veterans and their families, SIS allows our military, our vets and their families to receive low-cost (and free if necessary) individual, couple, family, or group therapy and counseling each week.
